Western Wall Workers remove the notes

Rosh Hashanah 2019 – Clearing the Notes from the Western Wall

Press release
As ahead of every Rosh Hashanah, the employees of the Western Wall Heritage Foundation has removed the notes that were put among the stones of the Wall in the last few months by visitors and worshipers. The notes were removed using wooden tools, not iron ones – as was the custom at the ancient Temples.
After the removal, the notes were packed and transferred into special Genizah containers that are meant to store holy books and papers. They will later be buried in the Mount of Olives, together with other Genizah items.
The notes of prayer were hidden inside the Wall by worshippers both from Israel and abroad, Jews and non-Jews. Many notes were also put there by the employees of the Western Wall Heritage Foundation, who received tens of thousands of prayers through the Foundation's website and mail services.
Ever since the previous Rosh Hashanah, more than 32,000 notes were sent to the Wall through www.thekotel.org. Over 1500 of them were sent by people in Israel.
The notes came from many countries around the world, including the US, Brazil, Hungary, Mexico, Germany, England, Columbia, Argentina, Ukraine, Canada, South Africa, Russia, Indonesia, Spain, Liberia, Poland, Australia, Ecuador, Switzerland, Nigeria, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Morocco and Hong Kong.
In order to protect the privacy and wishes of the note-writers, the removal area was isolated until the process was over. All of the notes were sealed inside special bags.
The rabbi of the Western Wall and the Holy Sites, Rabbi Shmuel Rabinowitz, accompanied the removal process and prayed for the hopes and wishes of all worshippers – to come true for the best.
The Western Wall Heritage Foundation continues to offer unique Selichot tours in the Old City that focus on the special atmosphere of the Western Wall during the Selichot prayers.

As we approach Rosh Hashana next week, the Western Wall Heritage Foundation is preparing for the traditional note-removal for the benefit of the thousands of visitors expected to visit the Western Wall during the holidays.
On Tuesday, 24 Elul, September 24, starting at 10:30am, Western Wall Heritage Foundation staff will remove notes placed between the stones of the Wall. They will then be transferred to the Mount of Olives where they will be buried along with sacred pages and books brought for “geniza”.
Millions of notes are placed between the Western Wall stones every year by worshippers and visitors from Israel and around the world, Jews and non-Jews, including notes sent via the Western Wall website, by fax, and by mail.
During these days prior to the High Holidays, the Western Wall Plaza fills with thousands of worshippers from around Israel and the world, with the number rising during the High Holidays themselves.

Routine check of the Western Wall stones ahead of the High Holidays 5780

Routine check of the Western Wall stones ahead of the High Holidays 5780

A periodic check of the Western Wall stones’ stability took place this morning.

The Western Wall Heritage Foundation conducts a thorough examination of the stones’ stability twice a year, before Passover and before Rosh Hashana. This includes the areas of the covered Wilson’s Arch as well as the wall of the Makhkama building. During the examination, the courses of stones are cleaned of various items that may be brought there by birds, and loose stone particles or mortar between the stones are removed. Mostly weeds were removed during the examination conducted this year ahead of Rosh Hashana, and a bird’s nest found between the stones was transferred elsewhere, meriting us with the additional mitzvah of “shiluach haken”, sending of the nest.

The Western Wall Heritage Foundation is also preparing for the traditional note removal that will take place on Tuesday, 24 Elul (September 24) at 10:30am.
The sacred removal is open to the media with advance coordination.
