On the eve of Ta’anit Esther this year, the Fast of Esther, rabbis of Jewish communities in Ukraine initiated a prayer event for children from around the world.
One hundred children from the Alumim Children’s Home in Zhitomir who escaped the war to Israel came to the Western Wall Plaza to say special prayers for peace and for the end of the war.

It is customary to give a “half a shekel” on the Fast of Esther in commemoration of the Temple and the census of the Jewish nation, and to atone for sins. It reminds us that alone, we are each only a half, but together – “Go, assemble all the Jews…” – we are complete and united.
